Heart Screening for ACS Teens
Prompted
by stories of promising young athletes and apparently health teens
dying of undetected heart ailments, Ultrascan, Inc. has teamed up with
Children’s Cardiovascular Medicine of Marietta to offer an affordable,
safe screening program to schools, sports teams and other
organizations interested in saving lives.
“Heart Screens for Teens” will be testing students on Saturday,
October 29, at Arlington Christian School. In reaction to the recent
sudden heart-related death of Ryan Boslet, a 17-year old Alpharetta
athlete, Ultrascan recruited top cardiologists and echo technologists
to work with its’ state-of-the-art mobile ultrasound units screening
students’ hearts and detecting potentially fatal conditions that
cannot be identified during
routine physicals.
The
echocardiogram exam is simple, safe, requires no preparation and takes
only 10 to 15 minutes. A registered technologist used an ultrasound
unit, which utilizes high frequency sound waves to create images of
the heart and to determine how well blood flows through the organ. The
confidential results are analyzed by a board-certified pediatric
cardiologist and given to parents. Any child found to have an abnormal
test
result will be referred to their pediatrician for specific
recommendations and medical follow-up.
Normally, the cost of this echocardiogram can range anywhere from $900
to $1500 and is usually not covered by insurance. “Heart Screens for
Teens” will provide the service for $58.
Monday
through Friday, Ultrascan is servicing over 100 hospitals and physican
offices in Georgia and is the exclusive provider of echocardiography
for all Emory Heart locations in Metro Atlanta and North Georgia. Most
of the Ultrascan equipment is idle on the weekends, allowing the
company to provide the equipment and their highly trained
technologists on Saturdays at a drastically reduced price to the
“Heart Screens for Teens” program.
For more information on the program, call Ultrascan at 770-813-8323 or

informational video.
The screening at Arlington is open to anyone ages 10-20. The school is
located at 4500 Ridge Road, just off Highway 92 between Douglasville
and Fairburn. Please contact Mrs. Janet Moroy, 770-964-9871 or
770-306-3631 for an appointment time.
