Ecclesiastes 4:12 “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.   A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.”

On Monday, March 3, 2003, (03/03/03) we will have a day of prayer.   Our theme for the day comes from Ecclesiastes 4:12.   The emphases of this passage is on the strength of three parts rather than just two or one.   We affirm this principle at Arlington that the home, church and school make up the three parts necessary for creating community that is not easily broken.

The establishment of community forms a unifying, central theme of the entire Bible.   Beginning with Adam and Eve enjoying community with God in the Garden prior to sin, to Israel’s covenant relationship with God, all the way to Peter’s sermon at Pentecost which ushered in the concept of Christian community, and ending with John’s vision of heavenly community from the book of Revelation.   God intends for his people to exist in community.   This means that corporately the home, church and school serve as the communal context for spiritual development.

At the very core of our community is Prayer. As we mutually lift up our concerns we are inviting God to be at the center of our relationships.   One writer has put it this way, “A community is a group of people who are socially connected, who participate together in significant decision making, and who share certain values that both define the community and are nurtured by it.”

This day of prayer provides spiritual nourishment for each strand present.   Let’s join together in shaping the lives of our children.   By participating, you are making commitment to the community of family, church and school.   This three-fold strand is not easily broken.
