Middle School - Grades 7 & 8
Junior High is designed
to be a transition between Elementary School and the college
preparatory High School program. Curriculum objectives
focus on
building further essential academic and social skills, creating a spiritual self-awareness, providing for early exploration of personal
and career interests, and developing increased personal
responsibility. Junior High is a time of expanding horizons. The basis
of school experience is finding encouragement to grow beyond the
classroom. Co-curricular enrichment is provided in a variety of
areas-social, physical, intellectual, and religious.
Academics
A recent edition of our yearbook, The Arlingtonian, described Junior
High as "...Changing. Changes of the body, changes of feelings, and
changes of the mind." Arlington Christian School provides an
environment of opportunity, security, and care for a time of
change during the junior high years.
The academic program for Junior High students goes beyond the core
subject areas to include exploration into Art and Music Appreciation,
Computer Basics, Introduction to Spanish, Drug/Alcohol Awareness,
Journalism, Great Books and Study Skills. Junior High students also
have the opportunity to be involved in the Chorus and Band programs
and in school Sports and Drama programs. In the testing of 1991, the
sixth and eighth graders scored in the 94th and 93rd percentiles,
respectively, on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills achievement tests.
In 1993, a seventh grader scored 1020 on the SAT and was invited to
Duke University's Summer Residential Program. During the past four
years, Arlington has had two finalists at the State Geography Bee.
Special Field Trips
Learning is expanded beyond the classroom walls through a variety of
field trips. Especially exciting are the sixth grade excursion to
Jekyll Island, the seventh grade trip to the Space and Rocket Center
in Huntsville, and the eighth grade trek to Washington, DC.
Spiritual Growth
Junior High is an important time for spiritual maturing. It is an age
of growing independence and responsibility. As a part of the Junior
High curriculum, daily Bible classes foster this time of growth. This
emphasis is also complemented by a daily chapel/assembly time for
students and faculty.
Faculty
Junior High classes are taught by a group of teachers who know their
subject areas and know the needs of Junior High students. Junior High
teachers average more than 8.5 years of teaching experience and 44%
have earned a master's degree.
