Arlington is celebrating 50 years of academic excellence with a past as varied and vibrant as the families it serves. In 1958, four neighbors (Hasson Calloway, Dr. H.B. Stillerman, Tom Holloway and Dr. Gregory Bateman) dreamed of a private school.  According to Andrew Sparks’ article in The Atlanta Journal and Constitution Magazine, “Classes began with 146 students, 12 teachers, a rolling 157-acre campus on Fairburn Road, a $290,000 debt, and a monumental granite building constructed originally for Fulton County convicts.”   The story continues, “…almost $200,000 has been spent remodeling the structure to give it a modern face lifting, offices, classrooms, a “cafetorium” for meals and meetings, green plywood panels on the front to hide the prison look, and exits – which it never needed before.  There are no bars now on the windows and students are learning the basic Rs, plus French, etiquette, Latin, history, Bible and science inside the once-formidable 18-inch thick walls.”

The first headmaster was Cmdr. Charles E. Owens, a South Carolinian who grew up at Sumter, spent four years as president of Porter Military Academy in Charleston, was president of Porter Military Academy in Charleston and was assistant headmaster of Shattuck School at Faribault, Minnesota.  Owens described the atmosphere, “Students must maintain certain standards of dress – no blue jeans, no ducktail hairdos, no moccasins, no excessive make-up.”

The first athletics department included soccer, basketball, and cheerleading. Not only did the sports grow, but also music, art, and foreign languages. With the school's rapid growth, more facilities were needed, which was accommodated by a donation of land in south Fulton County. The present facilities were built, and in September, 1976, the doors were opened at the current location on Ridge Road. Two years later, a gymnasium was completed. In 1986, the school merged with Greater Atlanta Christian Schools. After seven years, families desired a board and more local control of the school's operations. On July 1, 1994, the school was officially chartered as an independent entity. In subsequent years, the school has been blessed with its highest enrollment since 1974, while maintaining high academic standards and Christian principles.

In August 2000, another great feat was accomplished as a new high school wing was built in only 12 months. The hall contains eight classrooms, computer and science labs, and a high school office.

In 2007, Cannon Field was built and dedicated on the front campus.  Named in honor of Athletic Director Greg Cannon, the softball complex includes sod field, dugouts, bleachers and two-story concession stand and press box.  2007 was also the inaugural football season.  Since that time, the Charles K. Sewell Athletic Complex has been expanded to include lighting, seating for 750, the Bleakley Press Box, concession stand, and practice field.  Boys and girls play soccer in the spring.  In 2010, Arlinton was blessed by the generosity of her stakeholders to be able to completely refurbish the 30 year old football/soccer playing surface.  This came at just the right time since the field was devasted by the 2009 floods.
