ARLINGTON DEFEATS WINDSOR, 46-19

HOMECOMING GAME KEEPS WIN STREAK ALIVE

After a week of spirit activities Arlington Christian’s football team kept the season’s streak going to 4-0. Former UGA great and NFL standout Robert Edwards coached Arlington to the 46-19 win over the Windsor Knights of Macon. “This win was such a balanced game. Our rushing and passing game plans are finally starting to equal out,” Edwards said.

Both the Knights and the Eagles were pumped for the game. Arlington scored on the first possession with a rushing touchdown by ACS junior Antonio Williams. Windsor answered with its own touchdown and extra point on their first possession. Before fans could really get settled in after thehomecoming parade, the score was already 7-7. Williams would hit again on his second rushing touchdown of the night to make it 14-7.

The premier combo of Watson-to-Monday was on fire for Arlington. Quarterback Will Watson passed to Demetrius Monday for the two scores in the second quarter. “They just seem to be on target for his exciting brand of football. Our players stopped Windsor and made things happen for the offense,” Edwards continued.

Watson continued his strong play with a 40-yard pass to Kalon Baker who ran it in for a touchdown. Arlington’s next score was and 25-yard pass to Swade Hutchinson in the end zone. ACS Junior Shaw Powell sealed the win for Arlington with a 19-yard run in the fourth quarter. Arlington special teams blocked two extra point attempts by Windsor. Greg Pulliam, Brigh Wiggins and Jeremiah Guilford-Mann were in on the stops. Jabari Pompey kicked all of Arlington’s extra points.

Quarterback Will Watson (#8) hands off to Running Back Ben Copeland. Watson was named Athlete of the Week in the Neighbor Newspapers (9.7.2011)

In the first game of his senior season, Arlington Christian quarterback Will Watson responded to his coach’s challenge in outstanding fashion.

“Coach (Robert Edwards) really challenged me to throw with a purpose every time and I feel like I did that,” said Watson, who admitted he forced passes last season.

Watson completed 29-of-45 passes for 411 yards and five touchdowns – his final TD pass to Shaw Powell was the game winner – in the Eagles’ 41-38 triumph over Mount Vernon on Aug. 26.

“(My performance) was real encouraging for the whole season but as a team we could have played a little bit better,” Watson said. “But Coach Edwards put in a really good game plan and he put me in a position every play to succeed – receivers were open left and right.”

Watson also threw a 70-yard TD pass to Kalon Baker and two more to junior Demetrius Monday.

“A lot of my yards came from yards after the catch,” Watson said. “I hit my receivers on 10-yard passes and they would take it down the sideline.”

In spite of his success on the football field, Watson, who has a 3.3 grade-point average, plans to play baseball on the next level. He is strongly leaning towards attending Point University.

(Will is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Mark Watson of Palmetto. His mother, Amy Creel Watson, is an Arlington alumna.)

The Arlington Christian School EAGLES took advantage of an early lead to rest starters and allow younger players to gain experience in a 35-26 victory over the Dawson Street Christian Wildcats Friday night in Hogansville.  Will Watson threw for four touchdowns, and junior running
back Shaw Powel scored twice, including the return of a kickoff for a touchdown.  Kalon Baker, Swade Hutchinson and Demetrius Monday also scored as the Eagles built a 35-6 lead by midway through the second
quarter.

The Wildcats fought back in the second half, scoring 20 points, but could not overcome the advantage ACS had built in the first half.
Senior offensive line Michael Brock returned to action, while senior standout Nolan Hubbard, junior running back Antonio Williams, and junior lineman Austin Weiss were all given the night off to recover from
injuries and other health issues.  Coach Robert Edwards and his staff continue to make personnel adjustments in preparation for the conference season that begins on September 23 in Thomasville, GA against Brookwood School.

The Eagles moved to 2-0 in the young season, and prepare to take on rival Trinity Christian this Friday night in Newnan beginning at 7:30 pm at East Coweta Middle School field.

ARLINGTON OPENS SEASON
WITH 41-38 WIN OVER MT. VERNON

Arlington Christian posted a 41-38 win over cross town rival Mt. Vernon Presbyterian.  The season opener for the Eagles was a seesaw battle, but Arlington quarterback Will Watson threw five laser touchdowns to scrambling receivers.  All of the Mustangs’ scores came on rushing touchdowns. A preview of the evening came on the first series when Mt. Vernon ran 6 plays to get on the board for a touchdown and missed extra point.  Arlington junior Shaw Powell ran back the kick-off and Jabari Pompey kicked the extra point for the Eagles, making it 7-6.

ACS stopped Mt. Vernon’s drive and forced a Mustangs turnover on downs.  ACS  took over on their 30, and Watson threw a 70-yard pass to wide-receiver Kalon Baker that resulted in a touchdown.  The extra point was good, making the score 14-6.  Mt. Vernon responded with a score but missed another extra point to make it 14-12.  Arlington’s next drive stalled, and the Mustangs  scored another touchdown.  Their try for 2 was stopped cold by Dani Mambobo.

Arlington junior Demetrius Monday caught a 30-yard pass from Watson to put the Eagles back on top, 20-18. The Eagles missed the extra point.  The Mustangs scored on another long drive which was answered with a long Watson-to-Monday throw over the middle.  Monday scrambled around Mt.
Vernon defenders for the touchdown.  Arlington missed the PAT. Mt. Vernon again and added a 2-point conversion to end the half with Arlington ahead 33-32.

Both teams used the half to figure out each other’s offense and virtually neutralized each other in the third quarter.  Mt. Vernon went ahead 38-33.

Arlington Athletic Director Greg Cannon felt a momentum shift in the third quarter.  “Mt.
Vernon declined a third down penalty giving us a short field.  Watson passed over the middle to Baker for a first down.  The new set of downs gave us fresh take,” Cannon said.

With 7 minutes remaining Watson passed to Powell who dove across the pylon to put Arlington ahead 41-38.  After a failed fourth down conversion, the Mustangs took over at their 35 and marched down to the Arlington 20-yard line.

With less than a minute to go and with no timeouts left, Mt. Vernon Quarterback Elijah Burnette passed to the end zone on second and 2.  Arlington Safety Ben Copeland intercepted the ball to seal the win for the Eagles.  Watson executed a quarterback sneak as time expired, and Arlington ended the non- conference game,  41-38.

Standouts for Arlington included a key sack from defensive tackle Darius McNear.  Greg Pulliam played his steady, rock solid game, and Austin Weiss punched through the line all night. Senior David Kissinger defended the quarterback for many of the night’s best plays.  Powell was named Offensive
Player of the Game, and Copeland was Defensive Player of the Game.

Head Coach concluded, “ We played a hard fought game.  What impressed me is the determination of our team.  When any key player went down, our backups played well.  I am very proud of my team and the way they played together.”

Arlington plays away on Friday, Sept. 2, against Dawson Street.  The game will be played in Hogansville.

ACS FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2011

August 19, 2011

Now in its fifth season, Arlington Christian is building on the spirit of Friday night football at its Fairburn campus.  Competing in Class AAA of GISA (Georgia Independent School Association),Coach Robert Edwards has the challenge of putting players together who have come from many different directions.

“We graduated some top players, notably Charod Strickland who will walk-on this week at Georgia Southern, Dylan Downes, Levi Henderson, Stephen Epps, Andre Southern, and Avery Gann who will be playing baseball for West Georgia Tech, “ Edwards said. “Those graduates made me love coaching and helped me see football from a different perspective.  We have some excellent prospects  who have been working hard in the off-season.  Some of our top players have been sidelined with injuries, but they should be ready to go by the second week of play.”

“Last year was my first time coaching, and I really had a lot to learn.  This year I am much more prepared and feel that I am a better coach.”  Coming off a 7-4 season, the Eagles are moving in the right direction.  “I am counting on the seniors to lead us this year – Will Watson, Kalon Baker, Michael Brock, David Kissinger, Dani Mambobo, Nolan Huber, Jabari Pompey, Jack Berry, Evan Dudley and Chandler Worthen,” Edwards continued.

“Our opening scrimmage against Griffin Christian was a 19-0 win, and we needed that learning time.  Arlington’s high school takes an annual spiritual retreat to help our students live out our Mission Statement.  They have been in Mentone, AL for a couple of days to bond and prepare for the upcoming school  year.  Called “Road to Emmaus,” the retreat is a highlight of school life at Arlington.  Students have time to bond with friends and faculty and make a commitment to transforming lives,”  Edwards said.

Coaches at Arlington include Rod Perrymond who works with the running backs and linebackers.Lance Pepin  coaches defense and the offensive line. “Coach Pepin has been with the team since the first season.  We also have a fellow Georgia Bulldog Demetrius Douglas who has a great knowledge of the game.  Demetro Stephens works with the defense and tight ends on offense.  All of our coaches are great men of God.  I am very blessed to be part of the growth at Arlington.  This is a place I can minister through football.”

Fans will remember Edwards as a UGA standout and first round draft pick by the New England Patriots (1998).  After a devastating injury, he fought back and played for the Patriots and Dolphins before several seasons in the Canadian Football League.  He was inducted into the Georgia-Florida Hall of Fame and received the Ed Block Award and the George Halas Award from the NFL.

Arlington opens Aug. 26 at home against Mt. Vernon Presbyterian.  Game time is 7:30.
