Arlington Christian School Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team wins 100th straight game!

The Lady Eagles, coached by former UGA, Team USA, and WNBA player Lady Hardmon Grooms, won their 100th consecutive regular season game last night versus the Lady Trojans of Tatnall Square, Macon.  The 100 game winning streak began in 2008 and has continued over the last 3 seasons.  Coach Lady and her team have won the GISA State Championship 3 years in a row, the first two in AA and the most recent in AAA.  Coach Lady also received the GISA Coach of the Year Award last year.

Everyone in attendance for the potential 100th win remained on the edge of their seats throughout the very intense and hard fought battle between the Lady Eagles and Lady Trojans.  Going into halftime, Tatnall was leading by 6 points.  The Lady Eagles came back during the third quarter and were leading by 4 points going into the final quarter.  The final score was ACS 56 – Tatnall 47.

Senior Kalin Williams led ACS with 23 points including two 3-pointers.   Junior Larisa Bishop was not far behind with 18 points and 4 rebounds.  Ana Anderson, also a junior, led in rebounds with 10.

Tatnall Square, coached by Todd Whetsel, brought a very well-prepared team and played with a lot of heart.  The Lady Trojans’ top scorers were Ivey Slaughter with 16 points, and Blair Smith with 10 points.

Andy Landers, UGA Women’s Basketball Coach, Lady’s former coach and longtime friend, was in attendance, as well as several of Coach Lady’s former teammates.   Following a short confetti-laden celebration at center court, Coach Landers and Lady’s former teammates joined the Lady Eagles and their families for a reception to enjoy a few more moments of their very significant win before looking towards their next opponent.

Arlington Christian unveiled the 2010-2011 Girls Basketball State Championship banner at their first home game of the 2011-2012 season. This banner is special because it is the 3rd straight championship for the girls varsity team coached by Lady Grooms. The 3PEAT ceremony was held right after the Lady Eagles won their game vs. Westfield. The team received their championship rings in a presentation by Mr. Gary Kirkendall, President. He said “All of us who are part of the Arlington family – past and present – are very proud of these wonderful student athletes and the championships they have achieved. It is even more gratifying to see how the commitment to excellence has positively affected every aspect of their lives”. Members of the two previous girls championship teams and the boys state championship team from 08-09 were in attendance and participated in the ceremony. Coach Lady Grooms was also presented the GISA – Coach of the Year Award. “I love ACS basketball. I am blessed to work with such amazing kids and teach life lessons through the game I love,” Coach Lady said as she was presented her plaque. Coach Lady is a former UGA, TEAM USA, and WNBA player as well as an assistant coach last season with the WNBA New York Liberty. Greg Cannon, Athletic Director and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach said, “We have built a tradition of winning by committing to a tradition of excellence and we are fortunate to have Lady coaching here at ACS as well as serving as our Director of Basketball Operations”. The ACS Varsity Girls team record for the past 3 seasons is
